On Thursday night, members of the Briarcliff Manor Fire Department participated in our Elevator Emergency Awareness program.

Students began the evening with a classroom lecture covering multiple types of elevators, the anatomy of the elevator system as a whole, common practices for routine elevator calls, and methods for removing trapped occupants both swiftly and safely.

The second portion of the evening was conducted hands-on at an elevator located in a local apartment building. Members reviewed accessing the power room, properly securing power to the system, and the correct use of elevator keys to open hoist way doors. The night concluded with a discussion on Phase I and Phase II elevator operations and proper use of the fire service key. These skills are critical not only during fire emergencies, but also for EMS providers who must gain control of elevators during medical responses.

As always, it was a pleasure to be back home working with the members of the BMFD. We look forward to returning in a couple of weeks for the follow-up session, which will focus on technical and advanced elevator operations.
