| Although we usually find ourselves training with fire departments, today was a little different. Today we had the opportunity to work with the members of the Croton-on-Hudson Department of Public Works during a confined space training program. DPW recently purchased new metering equipment, a tripod, ventilation fan, and other basic equipment to help them operate more safely and be better prepared in the event of an emergency. Members often work in catch basins and underground vaults, so understanding confined space hazards and proper procedures is critical. The day began with a classroom lecture covering confined space hazards, atmospheric monitoring, ventilation, and equipment use. Members then rotated through skill stations where they became familiar with their new equipment and practiced proper setup and operations. The day concluded with a practical evolution where members entered a vault and successfully removed a simulated worker using their new tripod system. We commend the Croton-on-Hudson DPW for taking a proactive approach to safety and for investing in both equipment and training for their members.
